Perhaps NOT MHS? Charles Codman letter to James Deering, ca. 1830

Charles Codman, a Portland artist, wrote to his patron, James Deering, about a landscape painting he calls a "humble effort." He wrote, "This picture is an original design, and will require a strong light to have proper effect."
