Silver tankard, ca. 1770

Description

This silver tankard was made by John Butler (1732-1827), one of a small group of artisans working in Falmouth Neck during the Colonial period. Butler came to Falmouth (Portland) in 1761. His home was destroyed in the bombardment of 1775 and his career declined after that.
