Railroad engine house with turntable, Dover-Foxcroft, ca. 1990

Contributed by Oakfield Historical Society

Description

The Bangor and Aroostook Railroad engine house is near Dover-Foxcroft.

An "Armstrong" turntable can be seen in the foreground. It was referred to as an "Armstrong" because it was turned by a single person using a push bar inserted in a bracket on the turntable.

Steam engines were generally turned around for the return trip because they ran better going forward. Stories are told, however, of engineers reaching the end of the line late at night and, being too tired to turn it, running the steam engine backwards on the return trip.

Diesel engines may be run equally well in either direction.
