Thomas Brackett Reed gavel, ca. 1890

Thomas Brackett Reed of Portland served in Congress from 1877 until his resignation in 1899. He was the Speaker of the House of Representatives three times. This gavel was broken during a debate over the adoption of "Reed's Rules," which concerned quorum voting.
