Samuel Freeman shoe buckles, ca. 1790

Description

Shoe buckles belonged to Samuel Freeman of Portland (1743-1831), who was known for dressing in breeches, waistcoat and shoes with broad silver buckles, even after the outfit was no longer in fashion.

Freeman was an author, postmaster of Portland, president of the Maine Bank, and served as a city selectman.
