Ocean water can, 1873

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Railway clerk Henry Thurston Clark included this can with a trunk he experimentally shipped from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to San Francisco in 1873.

The label includes details about how water from the Atlantic Ocean traveled west, was dumped into the Pacific at San Franciso, then the can was filled with Pacific Ocean water that was later dumped into the Atlantic.

The shipment was meant to prove that unaccompanied baggage could be safely shipped from coast to coast.
