Description

Postcard of the Harriet Beecher Stowe house, 63 Federal Street, Brunswick, where she wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Calvin and Harriet Stowe rented the house from 1850-1852 while Calvin taught at Bowdoin College.

Her book was influential across the United States just before the Civil War, at a time when the issue of slavery was in great debate.

The Stowes left Brunswick in September 1852 for Andover, Massachusetts, where Calvin Stowe became a professor at the Theological Seminary.
