Description
The photo of Wood Island Lighthouse was taken by Joe Tully, Coast Guard CEU, in 1994.
The last keeper left in 1986 when the light was automated. The photo shows the house, unoccupied for eight years, in a state of disrepair. The maintenance shed is gone.
The tower with its adjunct stone building were built in 1839 and reconstructed a bit in 1858 to support the new Fourth Order Fresnel lens.
The tower is no longer "headless" as it was from the late 1960s to 1986, the time that the aerobeacon was atop the tower. Now (2005) it has its newly fabricated metal lantern room which looks a lot like the original cast iron lantern room. However, it no longer has its Fresnel lens. Now there is a remarkably efficient smaller acrylic lens called the VRB-25. The Oil house (built 1903) on the far left still stands though needs repair.
