Swish churn, Littleton, ca. 1860

Contributed by Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum

Description

A variant of the traditional dash churn. While the agitator of a dash churn was plunged up and down, in this churn the handle pivots on a pin in the lid as it is moved back and forth, swishing the cream with a paddle.

This churn held about 6 quarts of sour cream to turn into butter.
