Monument dedication invitation, South Portland, 1897

Description

Invitation to the dedication of the Cape Elizabeth Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Organizers printed 150 invitations as well as 106 posters and 500 programs.

The monument is located at the corner of Mitchell and Cottage Roads, South Portland.

The monument association was organized on September 30, 1891 and was modeled after the Portland Soldiers and Sailors Monument Association.

In 1895 First Congregational Church, also known as the Old North Church, donated land on which to build the monument.

The invitation reads: " So. Portland, Me., May 1, 1897. The Cape Elizabeth Soldiers and Sailors Monument Association invites you to be present at the dedication of its Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, at South Portland, Maine, on Saturday, the twenty-ninth day of May, eighteen hundred and ninety seven, at 2:30 o'clock P.M. Noah Knight, Sec'y"
