Sun Plane, 1837

Description

A typical cooper's tool used for barrel-making; also called a topping plane. A sun plane is used for leveling the ends of staves after they have been beveled with a cooper's adze . The narrow ledge created by the sun plane serves to hold first the chiv and later the croze to cut the groves on the inside of the staves to hold the cask heads. A tool used by Maine cooperÂ’s to fashion the hogsheads etc. of the Wine Islands trade. .
Size: 14" long, 3" wide, 2" blade.
