Description

Concession booths at the beginning of the midway at the Oxford County Fair of 1907 at Norway/Paris.

The fair, run by the Oxford County Agricultural Society, which was founded in 1842, has operated continuously since 1842, except for 1964-1968. It is now located at the fairgrounds in Oxford.

The view is northeast, and it was probably taken from a second floor window of the south ell of the Exhibition Hall. The fairgrounds are no longer in existence, having been taken in 1956 to provide currently the site for SAD 17 Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School.

The Exhibition Hall, the only remaining building forming part of a substantial number of structural facilities belonging to the old fairgrounds, has been was renovated during the winter of 2003/04 to provide facilities for Western Maine University.

The photo was taken by Minnie F. Libby, a skilled photographer who began her career in 1888. She owned and ran the Cottage Studio in Norway from ca. 1907 to –1943. Her photos, made into post cards, were sold at her own booth in the fair Exhibition Hall.
