The Waldo-Hancock Bridge, from the town of Prospect (in Waldo County) to the town of Verona (in Hancock County), was begun in 1929 and completed in 1931.
The bridge underwent substantial repairs between 1959-1961. This photograph is during those extensive repairs and is a close-up view of the roadbed under repair, with exposed reinforcing iron bars (rebar).
In early 2004, after 70 years of service, the bridge was slated for replacement. The Maine Department of Transportation determined that the suspension cables deteriorated to a degree that it is not cost-effective to rehabilitate.
