Phinehas Barnes, Portland, 1863

Description

Phinehas Barnes was born in Orland in 1811. After graduating from Bowdoin College he taught at Waterville College (now Colby College) for many years before moving to Portland.

In Portland he first worked as the editor for the Advisor, and then worked for many years as a lawyer, representing, among others, the Grand Trunk Railway.

He was also a member of the State Legislature and was a strong supporter of Portland public schools. Barnes died in Portland in 1871.
