Description

Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith of Skowhegan began her 1964 presidential campaign at the 45th Parallel, the half-way point between the North Pole and the Equator, in Pittsburg, New Hampshire.

She stands with Elsie Carper, reporter for the Washington Post; David Broder, and other members of the news media.

The temperature at the time was 25 degrees below zero.
