Children's Gate, Portland, ca. 1935

Contributed by Longfellow Garden Club

Description

The Children's Gate enclosed the garden behind the Wadsworth-Longfellow house and the Maine Historical Society building that is behind it on Congress Street in Portland.

Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow Jr. designed the Maine Historical Society building and the gate, which were built in 1907. His aunt Anne Longfellow Pierce donated the house to Maine Historical Society when she died in 1901.

The hand-painted lantern slide is part of a collection the Longfellow Garden Club, which restored and maintains the garden behind the house, used in talks.
