Marking gauges, ca. 1800

Description

A marking gauge has a sharp metal pin fastened near one end of the bar and an adjustable fence. A marking gauge is used by woodworkers to scribe a line in a board paralell to an edge. It is used for marking the layout for dovetail joints, hinges, mortises and tennons.
