Surveyor's half chain, ca. 1800
This chain is 33 feet long, or two rods in length. It is also called a half-Gunter chain.
Edmund Gunter, an English astronomer, developed the Gunter's chain and associated tables for surveying. A lot of land one chain by ten chains equaled an acre.
