Two piece brown satin dress, 1882

Description

This two piece brown satin dress is embossed with reddish brown velvet. The bodice has a mandarin collar, long straight sleeves, button closure at the cuffs, a brown satin insert in peplum, with a front button closure. It is fully lined and boned. The skirt is bustled in back with pleated side panels and three rows of pleats at the hem. The front has a brown satin swag apron gathered and tiered in back, all fully lined with brown cotton.

It is shown in the display entitled "Godey's Ladies: An Exhibition of 19th Century Dresses held at the Brick Store Museum in 1997. Godey's Lady's Book, which inspired this exhibition's title, was one of the most popular ladies' books of the 19th century. Each issue contained poetry, beautiful engravings and articles of interest to the women of that time.
