On November 22, 1805, eight students met and formed the Philomathian Society. A few months later the name was changed to the Peucinian Society and took its motto: Pinos loquentes semper habemus (We always have the whispering pines). The Society continued until 1879. This medal shows the motto (abbreviated) and H.W.L. It belonged to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow who was associated with Bowdoin College from 1822-1834, at first as a student and then as a professor.
