Child's violin, Boon Island, York, 1834

Description

Samuel Grover (1816-1898) was born on Boon Island, York. He was the son of Captain Eliphalet Grover (1778-1855), Boon Island Lighthouse keeper (1816-1839), and Susanna ? (1780-1858). Father was violin maker, probably taught son. Believed to have later moved to North Berwick and married Olive Jane Grant (c1837-1872) of Acton.

Pine with bone fittings. Thin black band painted along edge of top. Painted handle. Carved and painted human head at scroll. "Made by Samuel Grover" written on bout. Interior label "Made by Samuel Grover Boon Island, Maine, 1834".
