Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Maine Nuclear Referendum Committee members carry boxes of signed petitions to the Secretary of State's Office through the tunnel connecting it to the State House in Augusta on February 12, 1980.

They delivered about 16,000 signed petitions. The group already had delivered petitions with 32,863 signatures to put a referendum on the ballot to prohibit generation of nuclear energy in Maine.

The referendum that would have shut down Maine Nuclear Power Plant in Wiscasset was defeated in September 1980.
