Description
The town of Troy took over abandoned farms in the 1940s that had not paid back taxes, and planted to trees as part of the establishment of a town forest. In 1940 over 13% of the Town acreage was abandoned farm land, representing 17% of taxable commitment.
These abandoned farms were deemed to not have good farm soils, so the decision was made to plant them with trees, and turn the farms into managed forests, run by a local town committee.
While taxes were not collected on the land, the revenue from wood sales and timber eventually paid more than the lost taxes.
