Anne Longfellow Pierce's chocolate drinking cup, Portland, ca. 1780

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Anne Longfellow Pierce was the sister of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and lived in the Wadsworth Longfellow House in Portland. She may have sipped her chocolate drink for breakfast, which was common in the United States during the 1780s.

Anne left the Wadsworth-Longfellow house to the Maine Historical Society upon her death in 1901. She prepared instructions before her death, designating some items to be given to family members or friends, and that the remainder of the items would be left with the House. This chocolate drinking cup was one of the objects that remained in the house.
