Description

People stood in line to vote at the Spring Street Fire Station on the day Democratic nominee Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) was elected president, November 8, 1932.

The tall man looking at the camera was James Lawrence Newell (1883-1948), a Portland native and son of County Galway, Ireland immigrants. He was a staunch Democrat who worked for the party and was a great admirer of FDR. In 2017, the Spring Street Fire Station housed the Portland Fire Museum.
