Description
Neal Dow, later Mayor of Portland, discusses the extension of a major railway in New England to extend through Maine into Montreal, Canada. The Maine Central Railway Company contracted a deal with the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Company to carry out the project. In conjunction with this project, John A. Poor, who was working for A & St. L, founded the Portland Company with the purpose of building locomotives for this railway.
In the letter Dow corresponds with Charles Taylor, referred to as "Friend Taylor," who was the Director of the Maine Central Railway Company. Dow was a member of a Christian Church society, known as the Society of Friends, more commonly known as Quakers.
