Description
Pictured is a shop drawing from The Portland Company, of a ship boiler, including fittings and internal piping.
The Portland Company was established on November 10th, 1846 by John A. Poor and Septimus Norris of Locomotive Works. The company was created for the purpose of building locomotives to travel the railroads across the state of Maine, but also for building sustainable marine vessels.
This drawing was used as a universal component that could be modified for multiple different ships the company would build. It is a generalized version of a boiler used by explorer Admiral Robert Edwin Peary, whose ship the SS Roosevelt sailed to the Arctic Circle about five years later.
