Description
Eilhu wrote to his mother, Martha "Patty" Benjamin Washburn, while a student Harvard Law School. He inquired about more shirts and cotton drawers, family news, and going south. He expressed his appreciation of Dr. Henry Ware Jr's preaching at the Unitarian Second Church of Boston. Ware was a faculty member at Harvard and mentor to Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Born in Livermore in 1816, Elihu attended Dane Law School in Cambridge (now Harvard) before moving to Galena, Illinois to set up his practice. Washburne served as a U.S. Congressman and then became Secretary of State and later Minister to France.
