L. Estelle Allen, Farmington, ca. 1923

Contributed by Mantor Library at UMF

Description

L. Estelle Allen, affectionately known as "Ma Allen" to the students, was the matron of Purington Hall, the first dormitory constructed at Farmington State Normal School.

Allen enforced dormitory rules, but was still popular with students. She hosted candy pulls, clam bakes, Thanksgiving dinners, and tended to dormitory residents when they were sick.

Allen began as matron in 1914, when Purington Hall opened, and then transferred to the South Hall (now known as Mallett Hall) in 1924. She continued to manage both dormitory dining rooms after her move to South Hall. She is seen here on the front portico of Purington Hall.
