George Whitney letter to Gov. Washburn about Civil War quotas, Pittsfield, 1862

Contributed by Maine State Archives

Description

George Whitney, who served 13 times as Pittsfield town selectman, wrote Governor Washburn at the town's urging to relate concern that Pittsfield's Civil War soldier quota requirement was too high.

Whitney informed the governor that Pittsfield had already "furnished 99 or 100 men in all," and he appealed to Washburn to address the situation, should three additional men from town be required to enroll.

Whitney indicated they had, in fact, provided more men than the full quota. An additional man had been added to replace R. Tupper Jr. after he had "dodged" before leaving Augusta; however, Tupper was apprehended and mustered into service. Later records indicate that Tupper served in the 24th Maine Regiment.
