Description
The unveiling of the Soldiers' Monument and the dedication of the new Pittsfield Public Library on May 28, 1904, "marked an epoch in the history of Pittsfield" as described by a local newspaper. The dedicatory exercises at the library were held in conjunction with the Memorial Day observance that year.
The Soldiers' Monument is a seven and one-half foot bronze statue of a Civil War veteran at a parade rest, which sits atop a decorative base made from Hallowell granite. The Stephen Davis GAR Post #11 and the Woman's Relief Corps #16 were instrumental in initiating and raising funds to erect this memorial statue.
The Soldiers' Monument is part of the Memorial Day Parade route in Pittsfield, where each year veterans and children march, stopping en route to place a wreath at its base.
