Description

Anshe Sfard Chassidic congregation, formed in the 1880s by immigrants from Eastern Europe, built a synagogue on Cumberland Avenue in Portland in 1917. The synagogue closed in the 1950s.

Among the items saved from the synagogue were two memorial or yahrzeit plaques. They list names of deceased members of the congregation. Lights next to each name are lighted on the Hebrew date of the anniversary of the person's death.

The plaques were placed at Etz Chaim on Congress Street at the head of India Street in Portland.
