Eunice Sewall to mother, Portland, ca. 1846

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Eunice Sewall, who was about to turn 9, wrote from Portland, where she was staying with her grandmother, to her mother, Lucretia Day Sewall, in Mobile, Alabama.

Eunice Sewall, the first child of Lucretia and Kiah B. Sewall, spent her first four years living with her grandparents, Ezekiel and Eunice Day in Portland. After Kiah Sewall moved to Mobile for health and business reasons, Eunice spent part of her time in Mobile and part in Portland, where she attended school.

She wrote about a "babyhouse" that she and friends had made in a shed and that another neighborhood child apparently had robbed of many of its dolls and household items. She also commented on neighborhood boys coming to the area of the shed to get water.

She reported on her studies in French, grammar, geography, and arithmetic.

She also sent her love to her father and the "little ones," Ellen, born in 1841; Somers, born in 1843; and Lucretia, born in 1845.
