Kiah B. Sewall signed will, Mobile, 1852

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

In a signed will, dated August 16, 1852, Kiah Bayley Sewall (1807-1865) left his wife, Lucretia Day Sewall (1813-1897) his entire estate. He specified that "in any distribution" she made of her estate, she divide the proceeds equally among their children. He also made his wife executrix of the estate.

Sewall, a native of Phippsburg, was a lawyer in Mobile. He and Lucretia Sewall, a native of Portland, had 10 children. The couple had lived in Mobile since 1839, although Lucretia and the children often spent summers in Portland with her family. Several of the children went to school in Maine, as well.

When Lucretia Sewall died, only four of their children were still alive.
