Description
The Wadsworth-Longfellow house in Portland, sandwiched between the Morton Block of storefronts on the left and the Preble House Hotel to the right, remained a home until 1901. Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow, a son of Stephen and Zilpah Wadsworth Longfellow, probably made this photograph of the house that the family called "the Old Original."
Peleg Wadsworth built the house in 1785-1786 and he and his wife, Elizabeth Bartlett Wadsworth, raised their family there. When the Wadsworths moved to Hiram in 1807, their daughter Zilpah and her husband, Stephen Longfellow, moved into the house with their young family.
In 1880, Anne Longfellow Pierce, daughter of Zilpah and Stephen, was the matriarch of the house. She remained until her death in 1901, when the house became a museum and part of the Maine Historical Society.
