Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

The child's cup, found in an archaeological dig at 47 Brown Street in Portland in 2008, was made in England.

On the cup are printed aphorisms and what seems like an advertisement for works by Benjamin Franklin : "The Way to Wealth or Dr. Franklin's Poor Richard Illustrated," "Being lessons for youth on industry temperance frugality &c," "For age and want save while you may no morning sun lasts all day," ""Experience keeps a dear School but Fools will learn in no other way."

The image is of a man, woman, and child in front of a building.
