Blue shell-edge soup plate, Portland, ca. 1845

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Most of the ceramics recovered during an archaeological dig at an old privy at 47 Brown Street in Portland were English-made pearlware. Between 1780 and 1860, molded shell-edge pattern ceramics came to the U.S. in large quantities and probably were used in most American households.

This piece, with a plain blue edge, probably dates from 1840 or 1850.

John Corey purchased the Brown Street lot in 1850 and may have been living there when this piece was discarded into the privy.
