Morley transfer-print bowl, Portland, 1850

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Francis Morley & Co. of Staffordshire, England, manufactured this "Percy" pattern black transfer-print bowl in about 1850.

It was found in pieces and reconstructed during an archaeological dig at 47 Brown Street in Portland in 2008. In 1850, the owner of the property on Brown Street, which abutted the rear of the Wadsworth-Longfellow house, was John Corey, who was building a house at 47 Brown Street. He and his mother, Nancy Corey, probably moved into the house in 1851.

Tenants also lived in Brown Street structures.
